Application
(−)-β-Pinene may be used in the preparation of α-terpineol.
β-pinene has been used for the analysis of aroma compounds released from redbay and avocado wood by mass chromatography.
General description
β-pinene is a volatile monoterepenoid emitted from the Peterson avocado wood. Generation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from the gas phase ozonolysis of α- and β-pinene using the Master Chemical Mechanism version 3 (MCM v3) has been reported. β-Pinene is the key ingredient of the essential oil isolated from Cedronella canariensis. It is also the main component of the essential oils of resins of Pinus brutia and Pinus pinea.
(-)-β-Pinene ((1S)-(-)-β-Pinene, (1S,5S)-2(10)-Pinene, (1S,5S)-6,6-Dimethyl-2-methylenebicyclo[3.1.1]heptane) is a terpene. Its conversion to leveorotatory α-pinene by hydrogenation in the presence of palladium catalyst has been proposed. It affords organosulfates on gas-phase ozonolysis in the presence of neutral or acidic sulfate particles during indoor aerosol chamber experiments. Its reaction with ozone has been reported to afford CO2, HCHO, and 6,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]heptan-2-one.
