Analysis Note

Lactose fermenting organisms will appear red with or without a zone of precipitated bile. Non-lactose fermenters will appear as colorless to white colonies. Crystal violet and bile salts inhibits Gram-positive microorganisms, especially Enterococci and Staphylococci

Target Microorganisms: Lactose fermenting bacteria and coliforms

QC organismsE. coli (ATCC 25922)P. mirabilis (ATCC 12453)S. aureus (ATCC 6538) as negative control

Application

Milliflex® Cassette prefilled with MacConkey Agar is used in Bioburden testing water monitoring. and general microbiological analysis. It is widely used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry

Culture Medium

MacConkey

General description

Milliflex® Cassette are ready to use agar-based media to be used with Milliflex® or Milliflex Oasis® system for convenient, rapid and reliable bioburden testing. The prefilled agar cassette helps to streamline the microbial contamination testing workflow with quality assurance and avoiding risks of exogenous contamination. Each plate is a 3-piece assembly containing approximately 10ml of the media. MacConkey Agar is a selective medium for isolation of coliforms and E. coli. Bile salts and crystal violet present in the media largely inhibit the growth of the gram-positive microbial flora. Lactose and the pH indicator neutral red are used to detect lactose degradation. It is useful in differentiating between the lactose fermenting and non-lactose fermenting bacteria and also aid in isolation of gram-negative bacteria.
