Biochem/physiol Actions
Ig α-1 chain C region is a protein encoded by the IGHA1 gene in humans. IgA deficiency (IgAD) is the most common immunodeficiency and it has 2 subclasses, they are IgA1 and IgA2. Its heavy chains are encoded by the α1 and α2 genes. Galactose-deficient IgA1 (GdIgA1) has an important role in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN). It can act as a useful non-invasive IgAN biomarker. Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is associated with genetic as well as environmental factors and undergalactosylation of IgA1 in the serum may contributor to pathogenesis of IgAN.
