General description

Phosphorus tribromide (PBr₃) is commonly used in Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky halogenation for the a-bromination of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding acyl bromide. It is also useful for the conversion of primary and secondary alcohols to alkyl bromides.
